Israel cut customs on tomatoes to meet shortage

A steep rise of 74% in price of tomatoes in Israel in September this year has initiated the abolishment of the existing qauntative customs duty of NIS .90/kilogram. However the exemption shall be limited to a quota of 4000 tons and limited to imports made by the end of the year only.
The rise in price of tomato had alone increased the Consumer Price Index (CPI) by 0.3% in September. Duty exemption seeks to overcome the tomato shortage in the nation as Israel seeks to import it. The shortage has occurred due owing to damage by the weather.
